Berlin, Germany:  The Destination for Sausage and Potato Lovers

Interestingly, Frederick the Great influenced the cuisine of Germany.  He ordered that his subjects eat cucumbers and potatoes because these were cheap. Thanks to Frederick the Great, the people of Berlin still eat a lot of cucumbers and potatoes with flair and served with the top favorite --- fat spicy sausages.

Berlin Cuisine

Berliners enjoy a melting pot of cuisines due to the influx of immigrants coming from the different parts of the planet.  But a typical Berlin dish is simple consisting of fried meatballs or Boulette washed down with beer flavored with juice or Berliner Weiβe.  However, for a sampling of Berlin's gastronomic fare, check out the variety of tasteful treats in the different Berlin restaurants.

Berlin cuisine is based on three dishes; the popular Currywurst, Berliner, and Eisbein. Only in Berlin can you find sausage that is generously spiced with curry.  This is a favorite street food or take-out food served with bread rolls or French fries.

Berliner is a doughnut filled with marmalade or jam and topped with powdered sugar.  Fancier Berliners are topped with icing and are favorites during New Year's Eve.

Eisbein or pork knucke is deep fried and braised.  Berliners love the marbled meat and the thick layer of crackling or crispy fat. This goes with sauerkraut.  Cured pork knuckles sold in most meat shops or delis are used to enhance home dishes.  Here are a few of other Berliner favorites found in local pubs - rolled fillets of marinated herring, cold hamburgers minus the buns and dipped in hot mustard, and gherkins. For breakfast fare, tourists are treated to fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee, meat, and fresh fruits.

Bars in Berlin have no closing time and breakfast is served until 4 in the afternoon.  Get used to this eccentricity and have fun.  There is no end to the partying in Berlin - breakfast in the afternoon and party till the sun shines party till you drop.

Of course, Berlin restaurants also serve the global favorite - pizza.  There is Chinese and Japanese food, 150 kinds of cheeses, hundreds of varieties of cured meats, fresh meats, smoked fish, and poultry.  Potato lovers can gorge on six varieties of potato salads in any of the restaurants in the busy commercial center.
